How We Began
Founded by William (Bill) Slife a half century ago, Hy-Tek got its start as a Columbus, Ohio-based equipment dealer, Slife Material Handling. Fifteen years later, in 1978, Slife Material Handling expanded operations with the introduction of a 50,000-item Catalog Service Division. That 200-page catalog remains an integral part of our company today.
That year also saw the launch of an Integrated Systems (IS) Division, a single-source solution for design, engineering, installation, and storage systems needs. Thirty-five years later, the IS Division continues to flourish, providing distribution and manufacturing facilities with integrated systems that deliver efficiency and profitability.
Evolution & Growth
In 1989, more than a quarter of a century after Slife Material Handling opened its doors for business, Bill Slife's estate sold the company then generating $8 million in annual sales to five key employees. Under the leadership of Sam Grooms, our company's current CEO, and his four partners, the organization was renamed Hy-Tek Material Handling, Inc.
Acquisitions and expansions including the 1993 purchase of Ohio Material Handling, the Yale Lift Truck distributorship for Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky; the 2005 addition of a Lighting Division; the 2013 opening of our Integrated Systems Divisions office in Morganville, New Jersey and Winder, Georgia; and the 2013 introduction of Hy-Tek JCB, our Construction Equipment Division have helped build Hy-Tek's into the thriving company it is today.
Employee Owned. Client Driven.
An Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), Hy-Tek today is owned by its employees. Because every employee is economically and philosophically invested in Hy-Tek's success, customer satisfaction is always top-of-mind. A companywide commitment to exceeding customer expectations has served us well. Hy-Tek Material Handling has been debt-free since 2011.
Hy-Tek is headquartered in a 55,000-sqaure-foot showroom adjacent to the Rickenbacker Airport complex in Columbus, Ohio. The space, which doubles as a parts and service facility, houses most of the Industrial Equipment Division's construction equipment, industrial trucks, and mobile equipment.
Business And Philanthropic Leadership
Hy-Tek takes pride in being a good corporate citizen, donating time, talent, and financial support to over 30 local and national charities, educational initiatives, and sports teams. Our employee-owners are particularly committed to sending supplies to our troops overseas and contributing to the Toys-4-Tots holiday toy drive.
We also have established two internal programs that are close to our corporate hearts. As a tribute to the late Don Henery, a treasured former employee, Hy-Tek annually recognizes an employee whose performance throughout the year contributed significantly to the growth and efficiency of the company's sales and operations.
In addition, Hy-Tek has created the William K. Slife Foundation Wall, in honor of our late founder. Any employee-owner with 20-plus years of service receives an engraved brick that becomes part of an ever-growing wall at the Columbus office. Those bricks and the valued employee-owners they represent are the foundation on which we have built our company.
